Natural Gas and Home Heating Oil prices– What I Have Done:

As previously mentioned, natural gas and home heating oil costs were significantly higher this past winter than in previous years.   EIA expects these high prices to persist this coming winter.  These costs will disproportionately affect lower income Americans, who will be forced to choose between heating their homes and paying for food.  To address this serious situation I:

  •       Cosponsored an amendment to a House Appropriations bill adding $12 million to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to help Staten Island and Brooklyn seniors and low-income families pay their energy and heating bills.  The amendment brought the total amount appropriated this year to just over $2 billion dollars.

  •       Supported a bill which passed out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and passed the floor of the House in the Deficit Reduction Act adding another $1 billion to the LIHEAP program, bringing the total approved by the House to $3 billion.  This is the largest single year increase in LIHEAP ever!

  •       Sent a letter, along with two of my New York colleagues, to the Secretary of the Interior supporting a program to provide discounted natural gas to the New York area.  Such a program was made possible through the energy bill that passed earlier this year.  - Read the Letter-
