9/21/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on Capitol Security Breach

September 21, 2006

“An internal examination of this breach is currently underway and I don’t want to prejudge its conclusions before a thorough and thoughtful examination.  But I agree with the Capitol Police’s own assessment that there was an unacceptable response to this security breach.  It has been five years now since the tragic attacks of 9/11 and for this to occur just days after marking that horrible anniversary clearly shows that more needs to be done in terms of improved security.

“But we will also never forget how our nation responded on that fateful day. There was incredible courage, patriotism, charity and resilience exhibited by every first responder, law enforcement officer, and every citizen across this great nation. The true greatness of our nation’s character and spirit was on display on that day and thereafter.

8/25/06: Dodd, Lieberman Fault FEMA Decision on Waterbury Disaster Aid

August 25, 2006

Washington – Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) criticized FEMA’s decision to deny a request for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding to assist cleanup in Waterbury, CT, which was heavily damaged by a severe storm on June 2.

“The damage sustained in this storm was not the kind usually associated with spring and summer storms in Connecticut,” Dodd said. “The intensity with which the storm hit the area, particularly Waterbury, left many residents and businesses with significant damage. FEMA’s decision is extremely troublesome, as many of those affected by the storm have applied for federal assistance to help finance their costly repairs. I will continue to press FEMA to reevaluate the situation and provide Waterbury residents and business owners with the help they need.”

3/17/05: "Secrecy: It Can Work for You," with Richard Lugar, USA Today, March 17, 2005

Imagine that you lived in a country where newspapers only printed what the government wanted you to read. Where no television or radio report could be aired without the approval of government censors. Where reporters who dared defy the government could be fired, thrown in prison or worse.

Thankfully, our nation has always taken the opposite course. We consider a free and independent press indispensable to our free and democratic society. By keeping our nation's electorate informed about those who hold public office, and by holding powerful parties in the public and private sectors to account, the press is as much a part of our democracy as the Congress, the president and the Supreme Court.
