8/24/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on One-Year Anniversary of BRAC Decision Saving New London Sub Base

“The defeat of the Administration’s proposal to shut down the New London Sub Base was not only significant for Connecticut, it was critically important to our national security.  

“As the Commission came to understand, the Sub Base is part of an intricately developed network of military, industrial, and research facilities, including General Dynamics-Electric Boat, which, once dismantled, could never be fully re-constituted. 

7/25/06: Dodd, Lieberman Seek To Protect Eightmile River

July 25, 2006

Washington, D.C. – Acknowledging the importance of preserving and protecting southeastern Connecticut’s Eightmile River, Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) today announced that they have proposed legislation which would assign the federal Wild and Scenic status to the river.  The bill asks the Secretary of the Interior to designate Eightmile River as Wild and Scenic, following a comprehensive study highlighting the river’s intrinsic and environmental value.  A similar measure was proposed in the House by Representative Rob Simmons (CT-2). 

6/29/06: Dodd, Lieberman Help Secure Additional $4M for Coast Guard Research and Development Center

WASHINGTON- Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) today announced that they have helped secure $17 million for the Coast Guard’s Research and Development (R&D) Center in New London. The funding is included in the 2007 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill. Senators Dodd and Lieberman, upon seeing that the Administration’s proposed 2007 budget included only $13 million for the facility, sent a letter to the chairman and ranking member of the Subcommittee on Homeland Security to request full funding.  The committee approved the bill on Tuesday.

6/17/06: Senator Chris Dodd Delivers Remarks at Christening of New Navy Submarine USS Hawaii

Groton, CT – Senator Dodd delivered remarks at the christening of the Navy’s newest submarine, the USS Hawaii. Navy Secretary Donald Winter and Senators Daniel Inouye (D-HI) and Jack Reed (D-RI) joined Senator Dodd for the ceremony.

The USS Hawaii is the third and most advanced member of the Virginia Class of submarine, and is expected to be commissioned in January 2007. The submarine is named to recognize the collaboration between the Navy and the state of Hawaii, and in honor of the rich heritage of submarines in the Pacific. The USS Hawaii is 377 feet in length will have a crew of 134 men.

5/24/06: Dodd, Lieberman Announce More Than $216,000 In Equipment For Connecticut First Responders

WASHINGTON—Thirteen Connecticut towns will receive equipment worth a total of $216,000 to help improve first responder capabilities, Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman announced today. The equipment will be provided through federal grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under the Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP). The initiative provides law enforcement and emergency responder agencies with equipment to improve communications between local first responders in order to increase efficiency in regional responses.

Each year, the American Ambulance Association honors paramedics, EMTs, and other ambulance service personnel who "exemplify what is best about their field". Award recipients are selected by their colleagues and travel to D.C. to attend events associated with National Emergency Medical Services week.

There are six Stars of Life award recipients from Connecticut this year. They are:

Andrew Duval of Norwich;
Nicole Figueroa of New Haven;
Chris Handel of West Hartford;
Erin McNamara of New Britain;
Deana Peterson of New Britain; and
William Westermeyer of Meriden

4/27/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on House Subcommittee $400 Million Authorization Measure for Submarines

“Our nation can’t afford to wait – we need to immediately begin building at least two submarines per year. Our national security and our ability to protect our submarine industrial base depend upon it. And while this subcommittee approval doesn’t actually provide the funding to do that, it is important because it puts people on record that submarines should be a priority and not an afterthought.


3/31/06: Senator Dodd Unveils Port Security Legislation in New London

March 31, 2006
New London, CT – Senator Dodd today unveiled details of legislation, which was passed yesterday by the Senate Banking Committee, to address national security concerns related to foreign purchases of U.S. companies. Dodd authored several provisions of the bill. The issue came to the forefront during the controversy over the DP World deal to obtain the right to operate in several U.S. ports.
