“A Second Look at Wasteful Spending is Sound Fiscal Policy”

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell issued the following statement regarding U.S. Senator Judd Gregg’s commonsense amendment, “A Second Look at Wasteful Spending:”

“Americans are watching and we are committed to ensuring that this commonsense reform gets the vote it deserves. Last week the Senate demonstrated we are serious about lobbying reform and I believe we can do the same for fiscal discipline. I call on my colleagues to take this opportunity to pass this sound measure to reduce wasteful spending.

“Fiscal responsibility is not just an election-day issue. If we are serious about reform, we must take the steps necessary to connect fiscal rhetoric with fiscal reality. The commonsense reform offered by Sen. Gregg is an opportunity to do that—it deserves a vote.”

McConnell is a co-sponsor of the Gregg amendment, which gives the President the opportunity to veto wasteful spending and use the savings for deficit reduction.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Saturday regarding the President’s radio address to the nation, and the need to reform the tax code and make health care more accessible for America’s families:

“Too many people today who don’t get health insurance through their jobs are unfairly priced out of the market because of government interference. The President is right, the tax code should be changed to help them. Allowing all Americans the same benefits that large companies get when paying their health care costs just makes sense. By correcting this inequity, government can provide the tools necessary for individuals to buy affordable, quality health insurance for their families—and then get out of the way and let them make their own choices.

“By allowing Americans to deduct the money they spend on health insurance, we will encourage more participation—and drive down prices in the bargain. This, in turn, would allow more people to buy their health insurance directly, giving them the freedom to control where, how, and how much, they spend.”

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell released the following statement after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid agreed to a vote on U.S. Senator Judd Gregg’s amendment, “A Second Look at Wasteful Spending” on the next bill before the Senate:

“I appreciate that the Democratic Leadership has put politics aside to reach an agreement that guarantees a vote on this important amendment. Fiscal responsibility is more than a campaign slogan, and I trust that my colleagues will stand with the voters and support this commonsense reform when it returns to the floor. I am confident that we can now move forward to pass the ethics reform bill without further delay and demonstrate to the voters that reform is our first order of business.”

McConnell is a co-sponsor of the ethics reform bill and the Gregg amendment, which gives the President the opportunity to veto wasteful spending and use the savings for deficit reduction.
