More on 911 Economic Recovery
New York, NY – U.S. Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), and Peter King (R-NY), authors of H.R. 847, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, issued the following joint statement in response to the publication today of e-mail communications by members of the World Trade Center Science/Technical Advisory Committee (STAC), showing that the Committee is making progress toward advocating that cancers be covered under the Zadroga Act:
New York, NY – Today, the health programs provided by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act went into effect – a milestone celebrated by the bill’s authors, U.S. Reps. Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, and Peter King. Earlier today, Maloney and Nadler attended a ribbon-cutting at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, the site of one of seven Centers of Excellence in the New York City area created under the law.
WASHINGTON – Legislation introduced by Reps. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) and Charles Melancon (D-LA) to reauthorize the Mortgage and Rental Assistance Program was included in the Disaster Response, Recovery and Mitigation Enhancement Act of 2008 (H.R. 6658) which passed out of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on July 31, 2008, by voice vote. The Mortgage and Rental Assistance Reauthorization Act of 2008 (H.R. 5685) would help keep people in their homes in the wake of a federally declared disaster, such as a hurricane or terrorist attack.
“I am glad to see that Congress has taken steps to help communities recover from unpredictable disasters and help citizens stay in their homes,” Said Rep. Maloney. “By including the Mortgage and Rental Assistance Program reauthorization in this bill, we are taking a necessary step toward improving the way this nation handles disaster response and recovery.”
After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, individuals who required temporary housing assistance relied upon the Mortgage and Rental Assistance (MRA) Act for aid. Under the MRA program, many homeowners and renters were eligible for grants to repair homes to a habitable condition, or to obtain mortgage or rental payment assistance to prevent foreclosures or evictions. The MRA was discontinued by the Disaster Mitigation Act in May 2002.
“The MRA program provided critical assistance to victims of the September 11th attack in my home state of New York. Unfortunately, the MRA was not available to the victims of Hurricane Katrina or the California fires,” continued Rep. Maloney. “Many disaster affected area residents would have benefitted from assistance provided under the MRA. The lack of MRA assistance is detrimental to disaster recovery processes.”
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representatives Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) and Charles Melancon (D-LA) introduced legislation today that would help keep people in their homes in the wake of a federally declared disaster, such as a hurricane or terrorist attack. The Mortgage and Rental Assistance Reauthorization Act of 2008 (H.R. 5685) would provide temporary mortgage or rental financial assistance to homeowners and renters who lost a job or part of their income as a result of a disaster.
Washington, DC – The U.S. House of Representatives today passed an extension to the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) by a vote of 360 to 53. The legislation, which is crucial to the continued development of large commercial real estate projects in cities, will extend TRIA for seven years and help spur the further development of a private market for terrorism risk insurance. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, many insurance companies excluded terrorism events from their insurance policies. As a result, Congress passed TRIA as a three year temporary program in 2002, which created a federal backstop to protect against terrorism related losses. In 2005, Congress extended the program for two additional years. TRIA is now set to expire at the end of 2007 unless Congress acts again to extend the law. The measure will now be sent to the President for his signature.
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) today applauded the House Financial Services Capital Markets Subcommittee for passing the Terrorism Risk Insurance Revision and Extension Act (H.R. 2761), legislation that would extend the original Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA). Congresswoman Maloney, Chair of the House Financial Services Financial Institutions Subcommittee, is an original co-sponsor of H.R. 2761 and a strong advocate for a long-term TRIA extension.
Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) applauded New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s leadership in forging the settlement of all outstanding insurance claims stemming from the World Trade Center attacks. The landmark $2 billion settlement was reached after months of negotiations led by Governor Spitzer and the New York State Superintendent of Insurance, Eric Dinallo.
