Tom Carper, U.S. Senator for Delaware

The internship program in Senator Carper's office is an exciting opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain experience on Capitol Hill, participate in the legislative process and see democracy at work. Our interns will gain a comprehensive understanding of the political process and practical skills in preparation for future professional pursuits.

The internship program is open to college students and recent graduates with a record of academic excellence and strong interest in public service. Preference is given to Delaware residents. Positions are available in Washington, D.C. and Delaware for Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.

Washington, D.C. Program

Interns in Washington, D.C. are fully integrated into office operations. They work with the legislative team to perform research, draft letters and memos, and attend hearings. Interns also work with the administrative and scheduling teams to greet constituents, answer phones, give tours and provide general administrative support. Our interns also work with the press team to monitor media and we encourage them to attend capitol events throughout the Senate and House of Representatives.

Delaware Program

Interns in Delaware work closely with statewide staff to develop a thorough knowledge of local issues and constituent needs. Our interns support office staff and answer constituent calls, conduct legislative research and monitor local news outlets for daily developments. Interns have the opportunity to attend events, such as the state fair and town hall meetings.

How to Apply

To be considered for an internship, applicants must email, mail, or fax a completed application package to the designated office location by the deadline. A complete application will include a cover letter, resume, one letter of recommendation, a writing sample (500 word max.) and the application form.

Mail sent to the Washington, D.C. office can be delayed due to U.S. Senate mail screening procedures. For this reason, students applying to the Washington, D.C. internship should submit completed applications by fax or email to interncoordinator@carper.senate.gov.
