Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the University of California, Davis, on the occasion of the grand opening of its world-class, LEED Platinum-certified research and teaching facility focused on food science, wine, and brewing.
In 1999, George Radanovich and I founded the Congressional Wine Caucus with the idea that Members of Congress could benefit from learning more about the challenges of growing grapes and making wine. Additionally, we felt that people in the grape and wine business would be interested in hearing more about federal regulatory and legislative developments that affected them. Since then, we've held numerous policy briefings and wine receptions on Capitol Hill, and become involved in a wide variety of legislative issues, all with the goal of promoting our incredibly vibrant American wine industry from the vineyard to the wine glass. With my congressional district home to many wineries and growers, I was grateful for Mike Thompson’s invitation to co-chair the Congressional Wine Caucus. There are over 50 wineries in San Diego County and moving northward to Temecula, there are 35-plus wineries, helping make Southern California a center of the wine industry.
One of the attractions of advocating for the wine industry on a national level is the opportunity to represent so many talented and hardworking individuals who make such a significant contribution to the national economy. Wine is made all over the United States, from California to the East Coast, and Mike and I will be sure to promote not just their good work, but also their positive economic impact.
