Rogers: Legislation will make historic spending cuts, rein in government overreach

House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers has announced that the final fiscal year 2012 Appropriations legislation has been introduced in the House.
This package of legislation will provide critical funds for national security, one of the most basic responsibilities of the federal government. The bill will also prevent a potential government shutdown, support important domestic programs and services that the American people rely on, and make significant policy changes that will help rein in government overreach and help put the economy on more stable footing.
The bill also includes hard but necessary cuts to reduce government spending and help shrink the nation’s deficit. When all FY 2012 Appropriations legislation is complete, Congress will have cut total overall discretionary spending for two years in a row – the first time this has occurred in modern history.
“For an historic second year in a row, the Appropriations Committee has cut federal spending – slicing nearly $94 billion in discretionary spending compared to fiscal year 2010. This bill represents a bicameral, bipartisan agreement to implement these cuts, make a down payment on our deficit, help get federal agency budgets back to more sustainable levels, and rein in harmful government overreach into our economy,” Chairman Rogers said.
“This final legislation is the outcome of tough negotiations and meaningful, bipartisan compromise. As is the case in any successful agreement, not everyone got everything they wanted. But, this is a good bill that strikes a reasonable balance between reduced spending, wise federal investments, and policy changes that American businesses need to thrive,” Rogers continued.
The FY 2012 Appropriations bill package introduced today includes three separate pieces of legislation: a consolidated bill that includes the remaining nine FY 2012 Appropriations bills that have yet to be enacted; a bill providing funding for disaster emergencies; and a bill containing offsets for the disaster funding.
