Barrow to Continue Fighting for Georgia Farmers on the House Agriculture Committee PDF Print

Washington, DC - 12th District Georgia Congressman John Barrow (D-Savannah) today announced that he will continue to serve on the House Agriculture Committee in the 110th Congress.

"Farming is a way of life for thousands of working families all across Georgia's 12th District, and it's the economic backbone for most of the rural communities I represent," Barrow said. "Keeping my seat on the Agriculture Committee ensures me the opportunity to continue standing up for the interests of Georgia farmers."

Barrow has the honor of being the only member of the House of Representatives to currently serve on both the Energy & Commerce Committee and the Agriculture Committee.

Because of its broad jurisdiction, the Energy and Commerce Committee is an "exclusive" committee. That means its members are generally not allowed to serve on any other congressional committees. However, with Congress set to reauthorize the federal Farm Bill later this year, Barrow successfully fought for the opportunity to keep his seat on the Agriculture Committee.

"Without a doubt, energy is going to be a major component of this year's farm bill," Barrow said. "So when Congress takes up the bill later this year, serving on both of these important committees will give Georgia farmers a seat at the table and a voice in the debate."

In other news, Congressman Barrow has also received his subcommittee assignments for the Energy and Commerce Committee, taking seats on the Energy and Air Quality Subcommittee, the Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection Subcommittee, and the Environment and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee. Subcommittee assignments in the Agriculture Committee are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
