Health Care
Senator Dorgan believes access to quality, affordable health care needs to be a priority in Congress. He believes no one should be denied coverage or asked to pay outrageous premiums just because they need medical care. He supported legislation to expand the Children's Health Insurance Program to provide coverage to an additional 4 million low-income children across the country.
Since rising prescription drug expenditures are largely responsible for driving up health insurance costs, Senator Dorgan has championed legislation that would give American consumers, pharmacists, and drug wholesalers access to Food and Drug Administration-approved medicines sold in other major industrialized countries at a fraction of the U.S. price.
He has also worked on initiatives to help improve the overall wellness of the state. Senator Dorgan is a strong advocate for the Special Diabetes Program, which is recognized as the most comprehensive rural system of diabetes care in the United States, providing funding for diabetes research, prevention and treatment programs. He also fought to restore funding for North Dakota's Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program.
