Water Resources

Wyoming Valley Levee-Raising Project -- Since Congressman Kanjorski took office in 1985, the Wyoming Valley Levee-Raising Project has been one of his top priorities because it provides many of the citizens of the Wyoming Valley with Agnes-level flooding. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed the major flood protection phase in 2003.

Inflatable Dam -- The inflatable dam is an initiative that Congressman Kanjorski has spearheaded that will enhance the Luzerne County Riverfront. The inflatable dam would create a 400-acre marina that will make boating and fishing possible because it would create a stablized water level. In the case of a flood, the dam could be deflated quickly. Read the executive summary of the Gannett-Fleming Feasibility Study .

Combined Sewer Overflows -- Congressman Kanjorski has worked to get funding for Luzerne County to correct combined sewer overflows, which discharge raw sewage into the Susquehanna River during heavy rainfall.

Susquehanna Riverfront Development Plan -- Congressman Kanjorski has worked toward his vision of making the Susquehanna Riverfront a recreational area of which Luzerne County can be proud. He has worked with local elected officials and business leaders to help make this a reality, complete with a boat landing, fishing platform, amphitheater, walkways and portals to access the River's edge from downtown Wilkes-Barre.

Transportation and Infrastructure

Rail Link to New York City -- Congressman Kanjorski believes that restoring high-speed passenger and freight rail lines connecting Luzerne County, Scranton, Monroe County and New York City will be an important tool for economic development in the 11th District, making Northeastern Pennsylvania more attractive for business and tourism.

Cargo Airport -- Congressman Kanjorski is working with local and state officials to determine the feasibility of a Cargo Airport on the border of Luzerne, Carbon and Schuylkill counties.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport -- Congressman Kanjorski has worked to get more than $38 million in funding for important airport renovations, including the construction of the Joseph M. McDade terminal and new parking facilties.

Environmental Restoration

Abandoned Mine Cleanup -- Congressman Kanjorski has worked to get funding for the environmental clean-up of anthracite coal mining areas in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Brownfields Cleanup -- Congressman Kanjorski succeeded in getting mine-scarred land included in the definition of "brownfields" that are eligible for annual federal funding.
