Presidential Financing System | Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act | 527s |
Senate Campaign Disclosure Parity | Campaign Finance Reform Main | Timeline

The presidential public financing system is broken. The front-loading of decisive primaries and the emergence of candidates able to raise money far in excess of the primary election spending limits has exposed the weaknesses of the current system. But rather than abandon this system that served us so well for over a generation, we should update it to reflect the current reality of running for the presidency. That is why in January 2007, I introduced the Presidential Funding Act of 2007 to strengthen the public financing system. A companion bill has been introduced in the House by Representatives Christopher Shays (R-CT) and David Price (D-NC).

The presidential public funding system protects the integrity of the electoral process by allowing presidential candidates to run competitive campaigns without becoming overly dependent on private donors. My legislation improves and updates the system by increasing matching funds and increasing spending limits for candidates who participate in the system, among other provisions. For more detailed information, please view the summary of the legislation here.
