Agriculture Dairy Compacts
I joined with Senator Kohl to defeat repeated
efforts to extend and expand regional price fixing mechanisms,
such as the Northeast Dairy Compact, that discriminate against
Wisconsin dairy farmers. We led a bipartisan coalition to
fend off efforts to extend the Northeast Interstate Dairy
Compact and establish new regional compacts to allow 35 states
to set an artificially high price for milk in their regions.
There was enough support in the Senate to sustain a filibuster
to prevent the compact legislation from being added in the
Senate as part of the 2001 emergency agriculture appropriations
bill.
Legislation was introduced in the 108th Congress that would
establish regional boards across the country to set Class
I milk prices. This legislation, the National Dairy Equity
Act (S. 2525 and H.R. 4597), would have perpetuated the regional
divides that have torn the dairy industry apart in the past.
I do not support such legislation because it is not in the
best interests of Wisconsin’s dairy industry, and I
will continue to oppose regional dairy policies that harm
Wisconsin.
