Congresswoman Bordallo Mourns the Passing of Merizo Mayor Rita Tainatongo

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—August 15, 2006—Washington, D.C.

Upon learning of her passing in California yesterday, Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo joined island residents in mourning the death of Merizo Mayor Rita Tainatongo.

“Today is a sad day for our entire island, most especially for the people of Merizo,” Congresswoman Bordallo said. “My prayers are with Rita’s husband, Ramon, and her children during this time of loss.”

Over the years Congresswoman Bordallo worked with Mayor Tainatongo on various local community projects and charitable events.

“Rita was a dedicated, humble, and hardworking public servant.  She was a selfless leader who fought every day to improve the health, safety, and well being of the people in Merizo,” Congresswoman Bordallo continued.  “Her devotion to her village and her community is evidenced in the number of years she worked in the Mayor’s Office.  She has served her village in various capacities during the past two decades.  Her “hands-on” approach to leadership will be greatly missed.”
