Bordallo Requests Job and Vocational Training Funding from Department of Labor

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—May 28, 2006—Hagåtña, Guam .—

With Guam facing a substantial military buildup in the very near future, Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo has requested that the Department of Labor increase funding for job and vocational training programs for Guam to help meet labor needs.

“Guam will shortly receive a significant amount of investment in the form of infrastructure improvements to the island’s military bases and to civilian public works,” Bordallo stated in a letter to the Honorable Elaine Chao, U.S. Secretary of Labor. “An increase in job training programs available for Guam’s residents will yield significant benefits for the United States Government and will be vital to the island’s continued economic development.”

In her request to Secretary Chao, Bordallo emphasized the importance of this economic development to the impending arrival of 8,000 Marines from Okinawa.

“It is essential for the federal government and the Government of Guam to begin preparing now to be able to meet the labor and training requirements associated with the relocation of U.S. military forces to Guam,” Bordallo added. “An increased investment in job and vocational training on Guam by the DOL will go far toward developing a first class labor force on the island that is ready to meet the needs of the increased military construction.”
