Bordallo Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week with Guam Teachers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—May 4, 2006—Washington, D.C.—

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo honored two teachers from Guam today, Aileen Ortega of F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School and Jonathan Pilarca of John F. Kennedy High School, Guam’s 2005 Presidential Awardees for Excellence in Mathematics & Science Teaching.

“Teachers deserve recognition for the work they do for our students.  Aileen and Jonathan are being recognized for their excellence and their commitment to education.  Math and Science are challenging subjects to teach and this award highlights the importance of math and science teachers to the future of our nation’s competitive edge in the global economy.  Congratulations to Aileen and Jonathan and to all the dedicated teachers on Guam,” Bordallo stated.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program was established in 1983 by The White House and is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The program identifies outstanding mathematics and science teachers, kindergarten through 12th grade, in each state and the four U.S. territories.  Each Presidential Awardee will receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation and gifts from donors.

This is the first time that teachers from Guam have been awarded this distinction for both math and science.  Ms. Ortega teaches eighth grade science and Mr. Pilarca teaches AP Geometry.  Teacher Appreciation Week is May 7, 2006 through May 13, 2006.  National Teacher day is on May 9, 2006.
