CONGRESSWOMAN BORDALLO: CHALLENGES REMAIN IN IRAQ, SOLDIERS MUST CONTINUE TO HAVE NATION’S SUPPORT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—December 18, 2005—Washington, D.C.—

Following President George W. Bush’s Address to the Nation this evening, Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo released the following statement:

“I join President Bush in remaining committed to our mission in the global war against terror.  This past week’s elections in Iraq are a landmark event in the history of the Iraqi people.  These elections mark a new beginning and a new phase of our mission.  During my four visits to Iraq, my two visits to Afghanistan, and my visit to the Guam Army National Guard deployed in the Horn of Africa, I witnessed the dedication of our men and women in uniform to their mission.  We will continue to support our troops, and we will do everything we can to ensure they have the equipment and support they need to perform their mission.

“As the President stated, challenges remain.  The President has presented a National Strategy that focuses on security, democracy and reconstruction.  Congress has an oversight responsibility to ensure that the President’s strategy includes benchmarks for victory. These benchmarks will determine when and under what conditions our troops can return home. I share the view with many Members of Congress that our troop levels in Iraq should be based on progress seen on the ground and adjustments should be made with the advice of the commanders in theater.

“On a special note, I know that this is an especially difficult time of year for the soldiers and their families and I want them to know that we greatly admire their patriotism and we are thinking of them during this holiday season.
