Washington – Today, October 12, 2006 is National Lights-On Afterschool Day in celebration of afterschool activities which help keep kids active and engaged. The day-long, annual celebration, designed to promote the critical importance of these initiatives in the lives of America’s children, families, and communities, was commemorated by a resolution authored by U.S. Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), co-founder of the Senate’s Afterschool Caucus.

10/04/06: Dodd, Lieberman Announce more than $2.9 Million for High School Education Programs

WASHINGTON – Connecticut schools will receive a five-year grant of $2,976,074 from the Department of Education’s Smaller Learning Community Program (SLC), Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) announced today.  The SLC grant supports the development of small, safe, and successful learning environments in large high schools.

9/22/06: Dodd, Lieberman Congratulate Three Blue Ribbon Schools

Washington, DC — Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) today announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded the prestigious 2006 Blue Ribbon Schools Award to three Connecticut schools. The Blue Ribbon award is vigorously sought by schools across the nation. Winners must demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence; a strong sense of leadership; a clear vision and sense of mission; a high quality of teaching and challenging curriculum; and a strong show of family and community involvement in the school.

9/08/06: Dodd, Lieberman Announce More than $275K in School Safety Measures

Washington – Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) today announced that four cities and towns in Connecticut will receive help from the federal government to assist local law enforcement agencies with school safety measures. The grants, totaling $278,028 and distributed to the towns of Clinton and Granby and the cities of Hartford and Stamford, are disbursed by the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing (COPS).

9/01/06: Dodd, Lieberman Announce More than $2.8 Million for Early Reading First Programs in Bridgeport

Washington– An early childhood development initiative in Bridgeport will be awarded a 3-year grant totaling $2,888,208 to boost education and child development for low-income children, Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman announced today. The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the grants under the Early Reading First Program to support local efforts to enhance the oral language, cognitive and early reading skills of preschool-age children.

7/28/06: Dodd, Lieberman Laud Funding for Connecticut Higher Education

WASHINGTON – Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) announced today the allocation of $897,901 from the U.S. Department of Education TRIO programs to Fairfield University, the University of Bridgeport and the University of Connecticut. The money will be used to provide a variety of support services to minority and first generation college students, including academic and financial counseling, to help them graduate high school, and attend and succeed in college.

6/29/06: Dodd Co-Sponsors Student Debt Relief Act

WASHINGTON- Senator Chris Dodd today co-sponsored a bill which would help make college more affordable for young men and women. The Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, of which Dodd is a member, today released a report which found that federal student aid has not kept up with the rising cost of attending college, and as a result, more students and their families are relying on loans to finance their higher education.
