10/05/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on North Korea's Pledge to Perform a Nuclear Test

October 5, 2006

North Korea’s declaration that it intends to conduct a nuclear test is an act of provocation designed to get the attention of the international community.  While North Korea already claims to have nuclear weapons, testing would have devastating consequences for the non-proliferation system and international peace and security. Unfortunately, the six-party talks which were established to find a solution to the North Korean nuclear crisis are continuing to falter because of a lack of leadership.  As a result, when the Bush administration came to office, North Korea was estimated to have the capability to make one or two nuclear weapons. Now it is believed to be capable of making up to ten. It is critical that the Bush administration urgently assume a leadership role within the six-party talks and talk directly with North Korea so that a political solution can be reached to remove a threat that has only grown worse under its watch.”

9/14/06: Dodd Urges Appropriations Panel to Uphold Provision Vital to Army's Readiness

September 14, 2006

Washington- Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) today wrote to the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee chairman and ranking member urging them to retain the Dodd-Inouye-Reed Amendment in the 2007 Defense Appropriations bill, as conferences begin between the Senate and the House of Representatives to align the two versions of the bill.

The Dodd-Inouye-Reed Amendment addresses potential shortfalls in critical combat gear that challenge U.S. military readiness identified by military commanders. Sen. Dodd’s amendment, which was included as part of the 2007 Defense Appropriations bill and approved by the Senate 98-0 last week, would make available $6.7 billion to the military to close the funding gap in the President’s proposed defense budget originally disclosed by Army Chief of Staff Peter Schoomaker.  Prior to passage of the Dodd Amendment, the Senate bill only partially addressed the needed funding level sought by General Schoomaker.

“But we will also never forget how our nation responded on that fateful day. There was incredible courage, patriotism, charity and resilience exhibited by every first responder, law enforcement officer, and every citizen across this great nation. The true greatness of our nation’s character and spirit was on display on that day and thereafter.

9/08/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on Intelligence Committee's Iraqi War Intelligence Report

September 8, 2006

“This report is an extremely useful document because it makes clear once and for all that the justification given by the Bush administration for going to war with Iraq was not only terribly flawed, but was purposefully concocted to deceive the American people.  That is shameful.  Members of the Intelligence Committee have done a great service to the American people by bringing out the truth.”

8/29/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on One Year Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

August 29, 2006

“The appalling incompetence and indifference of those responsible for preventing and responding to this kind of disaster – beginning with the Bush Administration – should not be forgotten as the years go by and life returns to the Gulf Coast. Our country cannot ever forget those who were left trapped within their houses or to die of hunger or thirst simply because their leaders responded neither competently nor compassionately one year ago today.
