10/18/06: Senator Dodd Statement on Administration's Policy on Weapons in Space

October 18, 2006

“All of us want to ensure that we have a strong military and that our national interests are protected.   But I’m deeply concerned that once again the Bush Administration is taking a ‘my way or the highway’ approach in the area of space that serves only to alienate our allies, isolate us internationally, and in the end put us at greater risk.  Each and every time the Bush Administration has approached issues related to our national security and foreign policy in a unilateral fashion, America's interests have been ill served.  No where is a multilateral approach more critical than in questions of how the world intends to utilize space for the good of all mankind.  As we deal with the threats to peace and security from the proliferation of landbased weapons, surely we need to think long and hard before creating potential space based proliferation threats.  Once again the Bush Administration’s unilateralism could put our nation at risk.”

10/12/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on Coltsville Historic Distinction Decision

October 12, 2006

"I couldn’t disagree more with this decision.  This proposal offered a “win-win” for Connecticut and its people as its aim is to preserve both our nation’s history and create needed jobs.  It goes without saying that this application should have been – and needs to be -- approved.  Coltsville’s rich history and important national contributions should make it the ideal candidate for this distinction.  Clearly, this decision needs to be immediately reviewed and reconsidered.”

10/05/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on North Korea's Pledge to Perform a Nuclear Test

October 5, 2006

North Korea’s declaration that it intends to conduct a nuclear test is an act of provocation designed to get the attention of the international community.  While North Korea already claims to have nuclear weapons, testing would have devastating consequences for the non-proliferation system and international peace and security. Unfortunately, the six-party talks which were established to find a solution to the North Korean nuclear crisis are continuing to falter because of a lack of leadership.  As a result, when the Bush administration came to office, North Korea was estimated to have the capability to make one or two nuclear weapons. Now it is believed to be capable of making up to ten. It is critical that the Bush administration urgently assume a leadership role within the six-party talks and talk directly with North Korea so that a political solution can be reached to remove a threat that has only grown worse under its watch.”

9/28/06: Floor Statement of Senator Dodd on Military Tribunals

September 28, 2006

Mr. President, on September 11, 2001, America was attacked by ruthless enemies of this country.  It is my strong belief that the terrorists responsible for orchestrating this plot, as well as those who continue to plot against us in an effort to do harm to our nation and our citizens, must be brought to justice, and punished severely.

These are extraordinary times, and we must act in a way that fully safeguards America’s national security.  That is why I support the concept of military commissions -- to protect U.S. intelligence and expedite judicial proceedings vital to military action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.  In my view, as we develop such means, we must also ensure that our actions are not counter-productive to our overall efforts to protect America at all levels.

9/11/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on Fifth Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks

September 11, 2006

“America will never forget the treacherous and heinous attacks of September 11, 2001. We will never forget the blood that was shed. We will never forget the lives lost. And we will never forget the unfathomable pain inflicted on families forever changed by a loss of a family member or loved one.

“But we will also never forget how our nation responded on that fateful day. There was incredible courage, patriotism, charity and resilience exhibited by every first responder, law enforcement officer, and every citizen across this great nation. The true greatness of our nation’s character and spirit was on display on that day and thereafter.

9/06/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on Sudanese Government's Rejection of UN Security Council Resolution 1706

September 6, 2006

“I am gravely concerned by the Sudanese government’s rejection of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1706 (2006) which passed on August 31 and calls for UN troops to take over for African Union troops in Darfur. Moreover, reports this week suggest that instead of moving toward a settlement, the Sudanese government may be renewing its offensive. Increased conflict in Darfur will only exacerbate an already critical humanitarian crisis that has killed hundreds of thousands and driven 2.5 million people out of their homes.”

7/12/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on Bombings in India

July 11, 2006

“Today's attacks in Mumbai are barbaric examples of the threat that peaceful, democratic nations face from terrorism.  All Americans grieve for the innocent victims of these attacks and their families.  Although we do not yet know who is responsible for these attacks, the Indian people should rest assured that they have no stronger ally than the United States in the fight against murderous extremists everywhere.”

7/06/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on Launching of Missiles by North Korea

July 5, 2006“Yesterday’s launching of 6 missiles – including the long range Taepo-dong-2 missile -- by North Korea was a provocative act designed to get the attention of the international community.  This behavior is unacceptable and extremely worrisome.  The six-party talks which were established to find a solution to the North Korean nuclear crisis have remained stalled for too long because of lack of leadership.  Every day that passes without a resolution of the North Korean nuclear threat makes the Korean peninsula less stable and a greater threat to international peace and security.  It is now very clear that the Bush administration must urgently assume a leadership role, within the six-party talks and directly with North Korea as necessary, so that a political solution can be reached to remove the nuclear threat posed by that government.”
