8/06/06: Senator Dodd Celebrates Senate Passage of the PREEMIE Act



August 2006

On August 1, 2006 the Senate unanimously approved passage of the PREEMIE Act, legislation that aims to reduce infant mortality caused by prematurity by expanding and coordinating the research of the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control on preterm labor, delivery and care as well as the treatment of low-birth weight babies.  Along with Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Senator Dodd authored the bill.

6/17/06: Senator Chris Dodd Delivers Remarks at Christening of New Navy Submarine USS Hawaii

Groton, CT – Senator Dodd delivered remarks at the christening of the Navy’s newest submarine, the USS Hawaii. Navy Secretary Donald Winter and Senators Daniel Inouye (D-HI) and Jack Reed (D-RI) joined Senator Dodd for the ceremony.

The USS Hawaii is the third and most advanced member of the Virginia Class of submarine, and is expected to be commissioned in January 2007. The submarine is named to recognize the collaboration between the Navy and the state of Hawaii, and in honor of the rich heritage of submarines in the Pacific. The USS Hawaii is 377 feet in length will have a crew of 134 men.

Washington, D.C. – Senator Chris Dodd today spoke in favor of strengthening our country’s ocean policy, while at the same time ensuring that our oceans and fisheries continue to thrive. Senator Dodd joined his Senate colleagues at the unveiling of the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative’s (JOCI) report, “From Sea to Shining Sea: Priorities for Ocean Policy Reform.” “Our oceans support numerous species, affect nearly 80 percent of the world’s commerce and impact our international politics and law.

Senator Dodd today met with Liam McCarthy, a 13-year-old 8th grader at Middlesex Middle School in Darien, who won the Connecticut State National Geographic Geography Bee. Liam also represented Connecticut at the 2005 National Geographic Bee.

Senator Dodd today met with Connecticut members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. They discussed the economy, the need to stop outsourcing of American jobs and ways to strengthen Connecticut's aerospace and defense industries.
