WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Connecticut Senators Christopher Dodd and Joseph Lieberman (D-CT), Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3), Governor M. Jodi Rell and West Haven Mayor John M. Picard today issued the following statement on the closing of Bayer Pharmaceuticals North America. Approximately 800 jobs-600 research and development jobs and 200 administrative and marketing jobs-at the West Haven facility will be affected by this closure. Washington – Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) announced today that Connecticut will receive port, rail, and transit security grant funding from the Infrastructure Protection Program within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Bridgeport will receive $24,968 and New London $637,500 in port security grants. New Haven will share $53,800,000 in transportation security grant funding with three other Tri-State area cities. The State of Connecticut will also receive $189,000 in buffer zone protection funds. Washington – Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) criticized FEMA’s decision to deny a request for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding to assist cleanup in Waterbury, CT, which was heavily damaged by a severe storm on June 2. “The damage sustained in this storm was not the kind usually associated with spring and summer storms in Connecticut,” Dodd said. “The intensity with which the storm hit the area, particularly Waterbury, left many residents and businesses with significant damage. FEMA’s decision is extremely troublesome, as many of those affected by the storm have applied for federal assistance to help finance their costly repairs. WASHINGTON – Allingtown Fire Department in West Haven will receive a $42,123 grant, Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman announced today. Allingtown Fire Department will receive the funds for new equipment and safety and training programs. “Connecticut firefighters are often the first on the scene of a catastrophe. Washington – Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) today announced that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has awarded two radio stations in Connecticut the money necessary to help transition to digital radio, which boasts a clearer, CD-quality sound, and will allow the stations to expand and specialize their programming content. The $96,000 will be used to purchase the equipment needed to make the transition and is part of the nearly $8 million Congress authorized to help local public radio stations make the switch to digital systems. The storm, which dumped seven inches of rain on the city in two hours, damaged roads, washed out hillsides, and flooded many homes and businesses.
