9/28/06: Dodd Introduces Food Allergy Legislation Critical to Keeping School-Aged Children Safe

Washington – Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), the Ranking Member on the Senate’s Education and Early Childhood Development Subcommittee, today introduced legislation critical to the estimated three million children who suffer from food allergies, including milk, egg, peanut and soy allergies, among others. Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) co-sponsored the legislation.

9/25/06: Dodd, Lieberman Announce $13.7 million for Lead Poisoning Protection

WASHINGTON – Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) announced today that they have helped secure $13,714,771 in federal funding to help protect Connecticut’s children and families from lead poisoning.  The grants were awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control, and will be disbursed to the State of Connecticut, the City of Hartford and St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

8/06/06: Senator Dodd Celebrates Senate Passage of the PREEMIE Act

On August 1, 2006 the Senate unanimously approved passage of the PREEMIE Act, legislation that aims to reduce infant mortality caused by prematurity by expanding and coordinating the research of the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control on preterm labor, delivery and care as well as the treatment of low-birth weight babies.  Along with Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Senator Dodd authored the bill.

8/04/06: Dodd Measure to Help Combat Autism Clears Senate

Washington, DC – Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) today announced the Senate passage of S. 843, the Combating Autism Act, legislation aimed at improving and expanding the federal commitment toward autism, the fastest growing developmental disability in the nation.  The legislation, which he authored with Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), commits close to $1 billion to increase research to help improve our understanding of what causes this developmental disability and how we can best help individuals living with it meet their full potential.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Education and Early Childhood Education, today announced unanimous Senate passage of his legislation - the Prematurity Research Expansion and Education for Mothers who deliver Infants Early or “PREEMIE Act” – a bill to improve education for expectant mothers, to provide better treatment for babies who are born too early, and to expand research on premature births. The PREEMIE Act was also co-sponsored by Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN)

“Every child is a precious gift.  When one is tragically abused, molested or killed, the unfathomable pain and loss is beyond comprehension.  We need to do everything in our power to protect our children and punish those who would do them harm.   This measure will establish important new sentencing guidelines and a national sex offender registry, and lay out uniform reporting requirements for state sex offender registration programs.   As the author of an earlier bill that included many of the concepts that were incorporated into this measure, I believe that this legislation will help American to protect our children.”

7/19/06: Dodd Legislation to Help Combat Autism Clears Key Committee

Washington, DC – Recognizing the lack of federal commitment toward advancing research into the causes of and treatment for autism, a complex neurological disorder which affects one in 166 children born today, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) today followed through on a promise to help spur research efforts into the disorder. The legislation, which was introduced last year by Dodd and Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), now heads to the full Senate for further consideration.

6/29/06: Dodd Measure to Educate Mothers, Increase Research About Premature Births Approved by Key Committee

WASHINGTON – Senator Chris Dodd’s (D-CT) legislation which would expand research on premature births and improve education for expectant mothers moved one step closer to a vote in the full Senate when it passed through the key Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions today. Senator Dodd introduced the legislation with Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN).

Washington, D.C. – Senator Chris Dodd today introduced legislation which promotes children’s mental health and seeks to increase both the quality of and access to services for those affected. Sen. Dodd recently met with children, parents, mental health professionals and advocates at the Klingberg Family Centers in New Britain in April to discuss children’s mental health.
