Law Enforcement
Chris Dodd believes that Americans have a fundamental right to be safe in their homes and communities. He has long supported efforts to ensure that our law enforcement officers have the tools that they need to do the work of protecting citizens from criminals and other dangers. In that regard, he is a longtime supporter of the COPS law, which has provided billions of dollars for local police departments to hire, train, and better equip officers. When he saw reports that many police officers lacked adequate body armor, he introduced legislation to provide grants to local police departments to purchase this vital equipment. He has supported legislation to keep assault weapons, hand guns, and other dangerous weapons out of the hands of criminals. He opposed reckless legislation that would have protected irresponsible gun makers and gun sellers from being held accountable if their actions cause the death of police officers or citizens. He has cosponsored legislation to give law enforcement officials new capabilities through DNA technology to track down criminals and exonerate the innocent. He also supports legislation to give law enforcement officers new authority to investigage and prosecute crimes motivated by bigotry and hatred toward particular groups of people.
