Office of Native American & Insular Affairs Matters pertaining to Indian Affairs and Insular Areas are considered at the full committee level. The United States has a trust responsibility for American Indian and Alaskan Natives that is deeply rooted in American history and law. The Insular areas of the United States include the territories of American Samoa, Guam and the U.S. Virginia Islands as well as the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. In addition, the Committee oversees matters regarding the Compact relationship between the United States and the "Freely Associated States" of Palau, the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia.
