Guam Receives National Institute of Justice Forensic Science Grant

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—September 7, 2006—Washington, DC

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo announced today that the Guam is the recipient of a National Institute of Justice (NIJ) grant award.  Total funding under the Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grant is for $91,015.  The award is designated to the Guam Bureau of Planning for Fiscal Year 2006.

Under the Justice program, Coverdell funds are designated to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science and medical examiner services.  Funding is to assist in eliminating backlogs in the analysis of forensic evidence including controlled substances, firearms examination, forensic pathology, toxicology, latent prints, trace evidence and more.

“Recognizing the need for diligence in our continuing fight against crime and the prospect of terrorism, I am pleased with the National Institute of Justice’s support of our community efforts on Guamsaid Bordallo.  “The federal funds will greatly assist relevant agencies toward improving our island’s capacity to address crime and effectively administer justice in benefit of all residents.”
