Bordallo Discusses Veteran Needs with National Veteran Organizations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—April 4, 2006—Washington, D.C.—

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo and several members of Congress met last week with national veterans’ organizations to discuss the pressing needs of veterans. The meeting, held by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, was part of a series of meetings aimed at helping lawmakers develop policy.

“We owe much of our freedoms today to veterans. It is important for leaders in Congress to hear directly from the leadership of organizations like the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars,” Bordallo said. “I applaud Leader Pelosi for ensuring leadership in Congress takes the opportunity to have an open discourse with veterans’ organizations especially as Congress evaluates important legislation on veteran’s issues.”

The attendees also took time to pay tribute to Congressman Lane Evans (IL), Ranking Democratic Member of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, who has recently announced he will be retiring from Congress. Congressman Evans has fought Parkinson’s disease for several years. Congressman Evans was part of a Congressional Delegation that visited Guam in March of 2005. He joined Congresswoman Bordallo in hosting a town hall with local veterans at that time, a practice consistent with his commitment to outreach to veterans around the world.

“Lane has been a very good friend to Guam, and has seen the needs of our veterans first hand,” Bordallo said. “We all expressed our thanks to Congressman Evans for all he has done for veterans over his many years of distinguished and principled service. He leaves very big shoes to fill and his leadership will be missed.”
