10/12/06: Dodd Resolution Celebrates National Afterschool Initiatives on October 12, 2006

Washington – Today, October 12, 2006 is National Lights-On Afterschool Day in celebration of afterschool activities which help keep kids active and engaged. The day-long, annual celebration, designed to promote the critical importance of these initiatives in the lives of America’s children, families, and communities, was commemorated by a resolution authored by U.S. Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), co-founder of the Senate’s Afterschool Caucus.

10/03/06: Senator Dodd Speaks to Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute

Washington – While addressing the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute yesterday, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) challenged members to change conditions in the nation today that continue to lead to a disparity among children born in different socio-economic groups.


“My daughters will judge their father, just as your children and grandchildren will judge you. What did you do at the outset of the 21st century when you saw that the nation was moving in the wrong direction?” Dodd asked. “There are too many children in foster care and 200,000 children last June [who] graduated from high school, were accepted into college, and could not go because they lacked the financial resources. In America, you ought never be denied a higher education because of a lack of financial resources.”

9/28/06: Dodd Introduces Food Allergy Legislation Critical to Keeping School-Aged Children Safe

Washington – Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), the Ranking Member on the Senate’s Education and Early Childhood Development Subcommittee, today introduced legislation critical to the estimated three million children who suffer from food allergies, including milk, egg, peanut and soy allergies, among others. Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) co-sponsored the legislation.

9/20/06: Dodd, Lieberman Announce Efforts to Fight Youth Crime and Gang Membership

WASHINGTON – Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) announced today that the City of Hartford will receive $54,000 through the Department of Justice Gang Resistance Education and Training program (GREAT) to reduce juvenile gang membership and violence through the instruction and mentoring by law enforcement officials.

Washington – Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) hasintroduced a resolution designating October 12, 2006 as Lights On Afterschool Day, a national celebration of afterschool programs, designed to improve the lives of America’s children, families, and communities. Senator Dodd introduced the resolution with Senator John Ensign (R-NV), the founding members of the Senate Afterschool Caucus.

9/12/06: Dodd, Lieberman Hail Over $6 Million in Heating Assistance Funds for Colder Months Ahead

Washington- Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) today hailed the release of $6,073,328 in assistance targeted for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which will help low income families in Connecticut afford to heat their homes in the colder months ahead.   The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the funding as part of the $79.9 million contingency fund provided by last year’s HHS appropriations bill. Senators Dodd and Lieberman worked to include this emergency funding in the appropriations bill.

9/01/06: Dodd, Lieberman Announce More than $2.8 Million for Early Reading First Programs in Bridgeport

Washington– An early childhood development initiative in Bridgeport will be awarded a 3-year grant totaling $2,888,208 to boost education and child development for low-income children, Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman announced today. The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the grants under the Early Reading First Program to support local efforts to enhance the oral language, cognitive and early reading skills of preschool-age children.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Education and Early Childhood Education, today announced unanimous Senate passage of his legislation - the Prematurity Research Expansion and Education for Mothers who deliver Infants Early or “PREEMIE Act” – a bill to improve education for expectant mothers, to provide better treatment for babies who are born too early, and to expand research on premature births. The PREEMIE Act was also co-sponsored by Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN)

“Every child is a precious gift.  When one is tragically abused, molested or killed, the unfathomable pain and loss is beyond comprehension.  We need to do everything in our power to protect our children and punish those who would do them harm.   This measure will establish important new sentencing guidelines and a national sex offender registry, and lay out uniform reporting requirements for state sex offender registration programs.   As the author of an earlier bill that included many of the concepts that were incorporated into this measure, I believe that this legislation will help American to protect our children.”

7/21/06: Dodd, Lieberman Secure More Than $18 Million for State Transportation, Urban Development Projects

Washington – Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) successfully secured more than $18 million for Connecticut's transportation and urban development needs, they announced today.  These resources, which were included in the Senate's Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill, will go towards initiatives across the state aimed at reducing traffic congestion, promoting alternative modes of transportation, increasing transportation safety, increasing homeownership, fighting urban blight, and supporting youth development. The bill was approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee earlier this week.
