Education
Education is a priority and must continue to be a priority. It is our responsibility to provide the younger generation with the education they need to succeed in today's ever challenging world. I am fully committed to improving our schools and to ensuring that all children have access to a quality education.

When the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was signed into law, it laid out a blueprint for reform in our education system. Many states have embraced the fundamental goals of the Act and aligned these goals with reform initiatives within their own states. Now, I believe it is the responsibility of Congress to ensure that states receive sufficient funding to carry out the basic reform provisions of NCLB, while also ensuring that states have the flexibility they need to tailor reforms to the unique needs of their local schools. I do not want to see successful reforms undermined by unnecessary federal regulations and a lack of funding.

States are currently facing the most severe budget crises since World War II. In attempts to control spending, many states are forced to make difficult budget cuts and, unfortunately, these cuts often fall on education. While the causes of state and local budget deficits differ greatly, Congress has been taking steps to provide states with increased funding for education and live up to its commitment to adequately fund key federal education programs.

I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Senate to support efforts at the federal level that free states from invasive federal regulations. It is these regulations that unduly burden the system and prevent schools from doing what is most important – providing every child with the quality education they deserve.
