Satellite Observations of Aerosol Characteristics During ACE-1

Satellite observations of upwelling radiance at visible and near-infrared wavelengths over the ocean provide information about the atmospheric aerosol in the column in the field of view of the sensor. During the Aerosol Characterization Experiment -1 (ACE-1), data from the NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) was collected aboard the NOAA Ship Discoverer during its transit from Seattle to the ACE-1 operations area and at the Hobart Airport during the intensive aircraft operations. Analysis presented here will include aerosol optical depth retrievals from satellite-measured radiance and particle size implications from visible/near-infrared spectral signatures. The satellite analysis will be compared to optical depth measurements made by a hand-held sun photometer on the ship. Physical and chemical measurements of the aerosol will also be presented to support conclusions drawn from the satellite analysis. Hemispheric and regional variations will be presented and implications for aerosol s ources will be developed.
