The World Data Center for
Marine Geology & Geophysics, Boulder

encourages active exchange among scientists
& promotes excellence in data management
through international cooperation.

The ocean floor is a natural archive of information on how Earth works and has worked for millions of years. The composition and structure of seafloor sediment and underlying basement crust yield important clues to the evolution of life, ocean-atmosphere dynamics, and the tectonic processes that shaped Earth's continents and ocean basins as we know them today.

The World Data Center for MGG, Boulder manages all types of data from the ocean floor including underway geophysical measurements and derived gridded data sets, and descriptions and analyses of geologic samples. Data are contributed by sources from around the world and were originally collected for a variety of purposes, including academic research, international and interdisciplinary scientific projects, mineral resource evaluations, defense, and environmental baseline studies.

Data are available at cost of reproduction, or free on exchange. Many data sets are also available for free download.

WDC MGG is collocated with the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) in Boulder, Colorado, USA. NGDC is part of the US Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). WDC MGG, Boulder exchanges data internationally and is active in many international projects. Visitors are welcome and MGG personnel are available to assist.
