Success Stories
Experience and history tells us that Region V Midwest communities are
at high risk for experiencing natural hazard events such as floods, tornadoes
and severe storms. The lives lost, injuries suffered and property destroyed
take a financial and emotional toll on this region's communities.
FEMA Region V developed this web page to share some successful mitigation
activities that communities have participated in to gain peace of mind
and reduce future storm damage.
Our goal in sharing these stories is to motivate individuals and communities
to work together to better withstand the next disaster. Preparation, knowledgeable
planning, and sound floodplain management will play a significant role
in the protection of our communities. Readers can learn from other people's
experiences through these stories. We hope the web site will inspire each
community to create its own unique mitigation formula, according to its
disaster risk, and engage in a collaborative effort involving residents,
business owners and local officials.
The term "mitigation" refers
to measures taken to lessen the potential for future disaster damage.
The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) is funded by the Federal
Emergency Management Agency and administered by the state. HMGP
is designed to help break the disaster . . . rebuild. . . disaster
cycle. It strengthens communities to better withstand the next disaster
through the most cost effective and appropriate mitigation methods.
