WASHINGTON, DC - Prior to the fighting in Fallujah, U.S. forces requested all women, children and men not of fighting age to evacuate the city. As many as 250,000 residents have left; most are staying with relatives in surrounding areas. In order to support those temporarily displaced, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing food and relief supplies such as tents, blankets, mattresses, plastic sheeting, jerry cans, buckets, and hygiene kits to 12,000 of the most-affected internally displaced persons. USAID also contributed 4 health kits; each health kit will support 10,000 people for up to 3 months.
Prior to the recent fighting, USAID worked with the district government, moderate sheikhs and tribal leaders in Fallujah on 17 projects totalling $2.3 million. USAID activities in Fallujah were recently suspended due to security issues. USAID is prepared to assist in Fallujah as soon as security allows. The planned assistance model is based on the Najaf response, in which a rapid needs assessment was conducted, and quick impact activities were identified that would provide short term employment to local residents. Examples of activities are neighborhood clean-ups, clinic rehabilitation and municipality building repairs. The monetary value of the response will be dependent on local needs, which are yet to be determined.
The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
