Secretary Evans Statement on Soaring Employment Numbers

Commerce Secretary Donald L. Evans commented on October’s soaring employment numbers:

“Today's numbers affirm growing period of national prosperity under President Bush's watch. Hardworking Americans chose President Bush because he believes in signing the front of their paychecks and sending their money back to them. Many folks are cashing these checks, spending their money and helping this economy grow. Businesses now have more confidence to hire more workers and 450,000 men and women got up this Friday morning in a stronger position to support their loved ones.

The President has said that our work has only just begun. The Bush Administration remains steadfast in our work to keep our economy moving forward by making tax relief permanent, ending junk lawsuits, reforming our health care system and passing an energy bill. As we have said many times, we will not rest until every person in America who wants a new or better job finds one.”

Note: Today the U.S. Department of Labor reported that Nonfarm payroll employment increased 337,000 in October, far above market expectations of about 175,000. Revisions to August and September added 113,000 jobs. Thus, today there is news that there are 450,000 new jobs in the economy. We have now seen 14 straight months of job creation and since August of 2003 the economy has added 2.4 million new jobs according to the payroll survey.

The household survey, which according to the Labor Department is the “government’s primary source of data on employment status” today shows that there are more Americans working today than at any time in our nation’s history at 139.8 million.
