1997 Economic Census on American FactFinder®

American Factfinder
American FactFinder (AFF) is a database system that gives you access to the same Economic Census data that are also published in PDF. The advantage with FactFinder is that you can search directly for the data you want, can display data for all available sectors at once, and can download the results for further manipulation.

AFF includes all 1997 Economic Census geographic area series, industry series, and subject reports. A comparison identifies other reports available only in PDF or CD-ROM.

Near the bottom of the FactFinder main page are links to two kinds of preformatted reports: Each profile includes the 1997 population estimate for each geographic area shown. Quick Reports support printing and downloading, but not data manipulation or reformatting.

Example: Obtain an Economic Census profile for Peoria, Illinois.

This report includes every industry published for this area. Criteria for publication vary from sector to sector. For example, manufacturing industries are shown only where they represent 500 or more employees in a particular place (lower criteria apply to metro area and state data).

For several service sectors (54, 61, 62, 71, and 81) the figures under the "NAICS Industries" heading represent only establishments subject to federal income tax. Metro area summaries also include data for tax-exempt establishments, for example, hospitals.

From this page it is possible to consult definitions for each of the statistics shown, through the column headings.

The "Print/Download" button allows you to save a comma-delimited - spreadsheet format (.csv file) or a tab-delimited (.lst file). Comma-delimited files are easily imported into most spreadsheet or database programs.
