As a coordinating council and office at the White House, the USA Freedom Corps is working to help every American answer the President’s Call to Service by strengthening and expanding federal service programs to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. The following is a list of national service programs that provide meaningful opportunities for Americans looking for ways to serve our country by sharing their time and talents with others.

AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters. Created in 1993, AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service and consists of three programs: AmeriCorps*State and National, AmeriCorps*VISTA, and AmeriCorps*NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps).
 

Citizen Corps

Citizen Corps, a vital component of USA Freedom Corps, was created to help coordinate volunteer activities that will make our communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to any emergency situation. It provides opportunities for people to participate in a range of measures to make their families, their homes, and their communities safer from the threats of crime, terrorism, and disasters of all kinds.

Administered by the Department of Homeland Security, Citizen Corps represents five programs that provide opportunities for Americans to directly participate in efforts to improve homeland security. These include Citizen Corps Councils, Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), Medical Reserve Corps, Neighborhood Watch, and Volunteers In Police Service (VIPS).
 

Learn & Serve America

Learn and Serve America supports service-learning programs in schools and community organizations that help more than one million students from kindergarten through college meet community needs, while improving their academic skills and learning the habits of good citizenship. Learn and Serve America is a part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which provides grants, training, and technical assistance to schools, community groups, and colleges and universities to support new and existing service-learning programs.
 

Peace Corps

Established in 1961, the Peace Corps engages men and women 18 years and older to serve for two year assignments in countries overseas and help communities solve important challenges in the developing world. To date, more than 170,000 individuals have served in 136 countries as Peace Corps volunteers, working in such diverse fields as education, health, HIV/AIDS education and awareness, information technology, business development, the environment, and agriculture.
 

Senior Corps

Senior Corps is a network of programs that tap the experience, skills, and talents of older citizens to meet community challenges. Through its three programs – Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and RSVP (the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) – more than half a million Americans age 55 and over assist local nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations in carrying out their missions.
