ABOUT US
Since
its beginnings over a half-century ago as the U.S. Bureau of Entomology
and Plant Quarantine, Forest Health Protection (FHP) has built an
organization of specialists trained to provide technical assistance
on forest health-related matters, particularly those related to
disturbance agents such as native and non-native insects, pathogens,
and plants. We offer specialized assistance to incorporate disturbance
considerations into forest plans and decisions.
We
are part of the State and Private Forestry (S&PF) Deputy Area
of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service. Throughout
the Forest Service, our organization includes more than 250 specialists
in the areas of entomology, plant pathology, pesticide use, survey
and monitoring, technology development, and other forest health-related
services. FHP personnel
cooperates with a network of forest health specialists from
other Federal agencies, all 50 States, and several U.S. Territories,
universities, and other countries.
Our
MISSION
is to protect and improve the health of America's forests.
Our
VISION
is to work with partners to bring together all stakeholders to protect
and improve the health of our Nation’s forested lands.
FHP
is committed to finding innovative ways to rapidly respond to
forest
health threats to avoid unacceptable loss of forest resources.
WHAT
WE DO
FOREST
HEALTH PROTECTION is primarily responsibile for minimizing
the spread of established invasive
species and lessening the damages caused by native insects and
diseases. We protect and improve America’s
forests using cutting-edge technology to rapidly respond to
forest health threats.

monitor the forests of the United States to determine detrimental
changes or improvements to forest health that occur over time
and report annually concerning such monitoring. |
Technology
Development: We
develop and apply cutting-edge technologies, such as Geographic
Information Systems, Insect and Pathogen Modeling, Aerial Photography,
and Data Visualization. |
Technical
Assistance: We
provide technical information and advice on the various techniques
available to maintain healthy forests. |
Pesticide
Use Management: We
provide technical information and advice in managing and coordinating
