Coal Consumption by Sector, 1994-2003. This line graph shows coal consumption by all sectors for the years 1994 through 2003. The total U.S. coal consumption in 1994 was 951.3 million short tons and 1.091 billion short tons in 2003. The electric power sector coal consumption in 1994 was 838.4 million short tons and 1.000 billion short tons in 2003. The other industrial sector coal consumption in 1994 was 75.2 million short tons and 61.2 million short tons in 2003. The coke sector coal consumption in 1994 was 31.7 million short tons and 26.4 million short tons in 2003. The residential and commercial sector coal consumption in 1994 was 6.0 million short tons and 4.4 million short tons in 2003.
