- The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has been a lead donor to the AIDS Support Organization TASO since the late 1980s. TASO, established in 1987 in Uganda, is the first indigenous non-governmental organization in Africa to respond to the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. TASO is recognized around the world as a leader and innovator in the field of HIV/AIDS care and support. In Fiscal Year 2001, USAID provided almost $2 million in support.
- TASO services include: HIV prevention education; counseling and support activities; basic medical care for opportunistic infections, sexually transmitted infections, and skills training for income generating activities. As of March 2001, more than 65,000 clients (66% women) have received care and support through TASO, and more than 400 children have been assisted by the "orphan support" activities. TASO addresses the special needs of children and orphans of their clients through counseling and school-based support. Through USAID-funding, TASO supports the Memory Book Project in 10 districts, an initiative of the National Committee of Women Living with HIV/AIDS.
- Through the U.S. government's HIV/AIDS Food Assistance Program, TASO will provide food aid to approximately 7,000 clients and their family members this year (total 35,000).
- TASO's effective advocacy program helps decrease stigma and discrimination, and support the development of government policies and programs for people living with HIV and AIDS.
- Studies show that most TASO clients have adopted behavior change to reduce HIV transmission.
