Democracy and Human Rights Fund (DHRF): USAID supports a grants program which provides assistance through indigenous organizations that implement short-term, highly targeted country-level activities in support of human rights and democratic institutions. DHRF activities in Sao Tome and Principe include reference materials and equipment for the Ministry of Justice law library; supplies, equipment and furnishings for a journalists' club; and support for a weekly television program featuring political discussions by a panel of political experts from all parties.
Special Self-Help (SSH) Fund: SSH supports community-based development activities that have an immediate impact. In Sao Tome and Principe, SSH activities include classroom construction, school bathroom construction, and water source repairs.
Central African Regional Program for the Environment (CARPE): This activity works to reduce deforestation, encourage bio-diversity and improve forest management in the nine countries comprising the Congo Basin, which includes Sao Tome and Principe.
The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
