About the Office: The United States Attorney's Office (USAO), Northern District of California (NDCA) is responsible for representing the federal government in virtually all litigation involving the United States in the Northern District of California, including all criminal prosecutions for violations of federal law, civil lawsuits against the government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers.

The District stretches from the Monterey Coast in the South to California's northern border with Oregon, and from the Pacific Ocean in the West nearly to Sacramento in the East. The total population of our district is more than 7.3 million. The District's main office is in San Francisco with branch offices in Oakland and San Jose, CA.

Responsibilities and Opportunities Offered : We are looking for an experienced criminal litigator with strong management skills to serve as Chief of our Criminal Division. The Criminal Division represents the United States in criminal matters before the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. The Division is the largest division in the office and is divided into sections, including Major Crimes, White Collar, Securities Fraud, Organized Crime Strike Force, and Appellate with approximately 75 Assistant United States Attorneys assigned to the Division.

The Major Crimes Section investigates and prosecutes cases involving violent crime, bank robberies, guns, Social Security fraud and criminal immigration violations. The White Collar Crime Section investigates and prosecutes a wide variety of complex cases including public corruption (such as bribery, kickback schemes and theft of government funds), and health care, financial institutions, bankruptcy and mail and wire frauds. The Securities Fraud Section investigates and prosecutes securities fraud cases in Silicon Valley and throughout the District such as: financial accounting fraud by company management; insider trading at high-tech companies; and stock manipulation.

The Organized Crime Strike Force, investigates and prosecutes complex federal cases using conspiracy, continuing criminal enterprise and RICO statues in order to target and disable the most significant gangs and crime organizations in the Northern District. The Appellate Section reviews all criminal appellate filings, supervises moot courts, provides legal advice to other AUSAs, acts as liaison on appellate matters with the Criminal Division and the Solicitor General in Washington, and writes briefs and argues cases in the court of appeals.

The Criminal Division also includes the Anti-Terrorism Task Force, charged with the prevention and prosecution of any terrorist-related activity in the Northern District of California, and two units: the Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property (CHIP) Unit and the Asset Forfeiture Unit. The CHIP Unit oversees investigations of and prosecutes computer intrusions and theft of trade secrets, economic espionage, criminal copyright and trademark violations, as well as, property crimes, such as cargo thefts and remarking of chips. The two Branch offices in San Jose and Oakland also report to the Criminal Division Chief.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), have at least 10 years post-J.D. experience, and demonstrate outstanding criminal prosecutorial skills. Applicants must possess superior oral and written communications skills, as well as strong character and interpersonal skills; and have demonstrated the capacity to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. Significant criminal litigation and prior management experience is also required.

Travel: Some travel both nation-wide and internationally may be necessary.

Salary Information: Supervisory Assistant United States Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number years of professional attorney experience. The maximum rate of basic pay for this position is $123,150, plus locality pay, not to exceed $136,800 combined. Supervisory Assistant United States Attorneys serve on temporary promotions which may be extended indefinitely and terminated at any time.

Location: Position will be located in San Francisco, CA.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses may, or may not, be authorized. The determination of entitlement to the payment of such expenses will be made in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
