About the Office: U.S. Department of Justice, Criminal Division is seeking an experienced Attorney to serve in Washington, DC. on a team responsible for overseeing the Department’s capital prosecutions.

Responsibilities: The mission of this team is to ensure that Federal prosecutors in the various districts around the country who are prosecuting capital cases have enhanced access to the expertise and resources needed to do so effectively. The attorney will be assigned to the Criminal Division and will be responsible for: assisting the Attorney General’s Review Committee on Capital Cases in its evaluation of cases submitted to the Department of Justice for review; providing constitutional, substantive, procedural and technical assistance to United States Attorneys’ Offices in capital case investigations and prosecutions; assisting in the development of policies and procedures for Federal capital prosecutions; providing training on the Department’s capital case litigation; preparing legal memoranda and other documents; drafting and maintaining a brief bank and resource library; litigating capital cases; and providing assistance in post-conviction matters.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, territory, or the District of Columbia. Applicants must have at least two years of post J.D. experience to be qualified at the GS-13 level; two and a half years of post J.D. experience to be qualified at the GS-14 level; and five years of post J.D. experience to be qualified at the GS-15 level. Applicants should also possess an in-depth knowledge of Federal and/or state capital case investigations and prosecutions; experience dealing with complex legal and policy issues; and superior writing skills. Salary: Current salary and years of experience will determine the appropriate salary level. The possible salary range is GS-13 ($72,108) through GS-15 ($130,305).
