About the Office: As the principal litigator for the United States of America in the District of Massachusetts, the United States Attorney prosecutes all criminal and civil cases brought by the Federal government and defends the United States when it is a party in a civil case. . There are approximately 83 Assistant United States Attorneys in the Criminal Division and 18 Assistant United States Attorneys in the Civil Division.

Responsibilities and

Opportunity Offered: There is currently an opportunity in the Appeals Unit of the Criminal Division. In addition to reviewing appellate briefs written by trial AUSAs, the candidate will handle appeals (brief writing and argument), and provide expertise and assistance for significant legal issues that may arise in district court.

Qualifications: Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member in good standing of the bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least 3-5 years post-J.D. experience as an attorney.

Preferred qualifications: We are looking for an experienced attorney whose professional concentration has been in criminal, rather than civil, litigation. A federal clerkship is desirable. The applicant must have prior appellate experience, as well as a talent for, and firm commitment to, appellate work. The applicant must be highly knowledgeable about the substantive and procedural aspects of criminal practice; must be able to analyze legal issues quickly and correctly; must approach legal issues aggressively, creatively, and practically; and, of course, must write and edit extremely well. The position involves daily interaction with trial AUSAs, generally at times of great stress for those AUSAs. Applicants should enjoy working with and helping other people, and be able to deliver constructive criticism, even under the pressure of imminent time deadlines.

Travel: Travel within the district may be required.

Salary Information: Assistant U. S. Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number years of professional attorney experience. The range of pay including locality pay is $51,885 to $135,065
