We have had many requests to develop an educational tool to illustrate different aspects of highway noise barriers. The Volpe National Transportation Systems Center Acoustics Facility, in support of the FHWA, has produced a video describing noise barriers entitled, "Highway Noise Barriers: Performance, Maintenance, and Safety."

The video covers the following topics:

• Basic acoustics;

• Barrier performance;

• Types of barriers;

• Wall barrier materials;

• Barrier maintenance concerns; and

• Barrier safety concerns.

We hope the attached video will be useful to FHWA field offices and State DOTs. Sufficient copies have been provided for forwarding one copy to each Division and one copy to each State DOT.
