Overview

While India has the potential to be a catalyst for economic growth and development in an unstable region; poverty, rapid population growth, weak democratic institutions and health issues challenge the country. The world's largest democracy, it is also a key U.S. ally in the war on terrorism.

India is home to over 300 million people living in abject poverty, and unemployment has reached 23 percent. South Asia's modest economic growth rate of 5.2 percent in the '90s was not fast enough to combat the high poverty plaguing the region. Nor did it change the fact that one quarter of the world's under-nourished people live in India. Unequal distribution of food and land means that millions do not get enough to eat and agricultural management is poor.
