Overview

For most of its modern history following independence from Britain in 1948, Burma has been run by an authoritarian military regime that has isolated the country and repressed its ethnically diverse peoples. Economic policies have impoverished the country. In the past few years, HIV/AIDS has also emerged as a critical problem in Burma, with infection rates estimated to be as high as four percent.
