Overview
The transition from communism has been slow and troubled
in Bulgaria. Despite the exceptional progress of the
past five years, the country remains very poor by any
European standard. Macroeconomic stability and democratic
politics have not transformed yet into tangible economic
and social improvements. Bulgarians are frustrated
and angered by the influence of organized crime and
endemic corruption. In a nut shell, democracy and market
economy in Bulgaria are stuck in their adolescence.
