EMERGENCY FOOD AND SHELTER

As a result of an Office of Inspector General investigation, the Acting Director of a charitable organization pled guilty to ten felony counts of theft. The Acting Director embezzled and misapplied $260,750 of Federal funds intended for recipients of the FEMA Emergency Food and Shelter Program. At a previous press conference announcing the indictment, Charles J. Stevens, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California, stated, "It is especially egregious when people divert government funds that are intended to assist the less fortunate among us." He further said, "This prosecution might serve as a warning to those who may consider abusing such a position of trust in the future." Sentencing is scheduled for April 1997.
