U.S. Coal Exports and Imports, 1994-2003. This line graph shows exports and imports of coal for the years 1994 through 2003. Coal imports in 1994 were 7.6 million short tons and 25.0 million short tons in 2003. Total U.S. coal exports in 1994 were 71.4 million short tons and 43.0 million short tons in 2003. Metallurgical coal exports in 1994 were 47.3 million short tons and 22.1 million short tons in 2003. Steam coal exports in 1994 were 24.0 million short tons and 20.9 million short tons in 2003.
