Electric Power Sector Consumption of Coal by Census Division, 2003. This map of the United States shows the total coal consumed by each of the nine Census Divisions in 2003 and the percentage change from 2002. The U.S. total coal consumed by the electric power sector in 2003 was 1.00 billion short tons, an increase of 2.4 percent. The New England Census Division coal consumption by the electric power sector in 2003 was 8.3 million short tons, an increase of 5.9 percent. The Middle Atlantic Census Division coal consumption by the electric power sector in 2003 was 64.5 million short tons, an increase of 2.3 percent. The South Atlantic Census Division coal consumption by the electric power sector in 2003 was 169.7 million short tons, a decrease of 0.5 percent. The East North Central Census Division coal consumption by the electric power sector in 2003 was 223.7 million short tons, an increase of 1.9 percent. The East South Central Census Division coal consumption by the electric power sector in 2003 was 106.6 million short tons, an increase of 1.9 percent. The West North Central Census Division coal consumption by the electric power sector in 2003 was 148.4 million short tons, an increase of 4.2 percent. The West South Central Census Division coal consumption by the electric power sector in 2003 was 151.9 million short tons, an increase of 4.4 percent. The Mountain Census Division coal consumption by the electric power sector in 2003 was 115.4 million short tons, an increase of 2.2 percent. The Pacific Contiguous Census Division coal consumption by the electric power sector in 2003 was 10.8 million short tons, an increase of 16.8 percent. The Pacific Noncontiguous Census Division coal consumption by the electric power sector in 2003 was 1.2 million short tons, a decrease of 1.3 percent.
